WIDA PRIME

What is WIDA PRIME

WIDA PRIME is a tool to assist publishers and educators in analyzing their materials for the presence of key components of the WIDA Standards. PRIME stands for Protocol for Review of Instructional Materials for ELLs.

The WIDA PRIME correlation process identifies how the components of the Kindergarten-Grade 12 WIDA English Language Development Standards are represented in instructional materials. These materials may include core and supplemental texts, websites and software (e.g., apps, computer programs), and other ancillary materials.

We continue to support WIDA PRIME V2 for Spanish Language Development materials. PRIME V2 for Spanish language development identifies how the components of the Spanish Language Development (SLD) Standards 2013 edition are represented in instructional materials.

WIDA has a unique perspective on how to conceptualize and use language development standards. We welcome the opportunity to work with both publishers and educators. We hope that in using this inventory, publishers and educators will gain a keener insight into the facets involved in the language development of language learners, both in the U.S. and internationally, as they pertain to products.

The latest news on WIDA PRIME 2020:  WIDA recognizes that educators and publishers are still in the early stages of implementing the WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition and hopes that PRIME 2020 will support thoughtful integration of content and language learning over time. With this purpose, WIDA has updated PRIME to include rubric criteria that align to the four components of the Framework.

Once WIDA PRIME 2020 launches in early 2023, publisher teams will use a portfolio workbook to consider alignment with the Framework as part of their request for a PRIME review. WIDA-trained reviewers will consider alignment claims and evidence for all four Framework components to determine eligibility for a PRIME Seal.

Although local users will not be able to apply for a PRIME Seal, they will be able to download the WIDA PRIME 2020 rubric (and the complete portfolio workbook for publishers) as a tool to support their decision making and planning related to improving the quality of learning for multilingual learners in their schools and districts. Local users may use the PRIME materials creatively for their own purposes, including instructional planning and curriculum mapping.

Please note that WIDA does not endorse any set of instructional materials. WIDA PRIME is not an evaluative tool that judges the effectiveness of published materials using the WIDA Language Development Standards. ELL teachers work with a wide range of needs and in a wide range of environments. For this reason, teachers should consider the information contained in the WIDA PRIME Correlations to determine how particular materials fit in their program.

Educators

Benefits for Educators

WIDA PRIME is a tool for educators to learn how their materials relate to the WIDA Standards Framework.

This provides educators with clear evidence for how the materials serve multilingual learners in relation to the WIDA Framework. Published materials with the WIDA PRIME seal are posted on the Correlated Instructional Materials page.

Please note that WIDA does not endorse any of the materials that have gone through the PRIME process.  Any questions you have about the materials will need to be sent to the publisher directly.

Correlated Instructional Materials

WIDA is pleased to list instructional materials that have gone through the correlation process and received a PRIME seal. You may find correlations that were previously correlated with PRIME V1 and PRIME V2 here.

We will be adding more materials correlated with WIDA PRIME V2 for Spanish Language Development Correlations as we receive them, and those correlated with WIDA PRIME 2020 for English Language Development materials when that is released.
