What is WIDA PRIME
WIDA PRIME is a tool to assist publishers and educators in analyzing their materials for the presence of key components of the WIDA Standards. PRIME stands for Protocol for Review of Instructional Materials with the English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition (PRIME 2020).
The WIDA PRIME process identifies how the components of the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition, Kindergarten-Grade 12 are represented in instructional materials. These materials may include core and supplemental texts, websites and software (e.g., apps, computer programs), and other ancillary materials.
We continue to support WIDA PRIME V2 for Spanish Language Development materials. PRIME V2 for Spanish language development identifies how the components of the WIDA Spanish Language Development (SLD) Standards, 2013 Edition, Kindergarten-Grade 12 are represented in instructional materials.
WIDA has a unique perspective on how to conceptualize and use language development standards. We welcome the opportunity to work with both publishers and educators. We hope that in using this inventory, publishers and educators will gain a keener insight into the facets involved in the language development of language learners, both in the U.S. and internationally, as they pertain to products.
Educational entities (publishers and local users) may use WIDA PRIME to:
- Prompt productive conversations about how instructional materials are serving multilingual learners
- Guide self-reflection, self-analysis, self-assessment, and self-determination of a degree of alignment between a given set of instructional materials and the WIDA ELD Standards Framework via the criteria specified in the PRIME rubric
- Collect evidence and information about instructional materials for potential improvements and revisions to strengthen alignment with the WIDA ELD Standards Framework
- Support communication with stakeholders (e.g., parents, program directors, school boards, teachers, program reviewers) about instructional materials under consideration for adoption
Please note that WIDA does not endorse any set of instructional materials. WIDA PRIME is not an evaluative tool that judges the effectiveness of published materials. EL teachers work with a wide range of needs and in a wide range of environments. For this reason, teachers should consider the information contained in the WIDA PRIME documents to determine how particular materials fit in their program.
